July 22, 2010- End of Session 1
The a.m. Opti class improved a great deal over the past two weeks. They played follow the leader and changed places in line with ease. All sailors developed their upwind sailing skills, and played hangman on the water. On the rainy day they built their own junk yard boats and played capture the flag. We are saying goodbye to Jessica and Amanda Allen and hope to see them next year on the Bay. Great job sailing and we will miss you both!
The Advanced Opti class has been developing their racing skills running the digital ‘N’ course and trying rabbit starts. The group also ventured into the Sound to work on racing in choppy seas. The 420 sailors worked on cross wind slalom and digital ‘N’ race courses and executed race coursed in the Sound as well.We are looking forward to Session 2 adding a few new sailors Julia Martin, Tim Carlough, Michelle Martin, Mike Merrill and Quinn Burkitt. IMPORTANT-A modification to the Optimist program is being implemented beginning Monday July 25th. The instructors are recommending that those Optimist sailors who do not want to compete in team sailing races against other clubs move to the a.m. Intermediate class. Intermediate Optimist sailors will continue learning more technical sailing drills, some racing but will not go into the Sound to practice. To accommodate this change in focus the a.m. Opti class will be split into two levels: Beginner/Advanced Beginner and Intermediate sailors. If your son/daughter is an Optimist sailor and does not want to race competitively they are requested to move to the a.m. class (9-noon) for instruction. If you have any questions regarding this change or where your sailor belongs please speak to the instructors.
The annual Wianno Opti Regatta will be held on Weds July 28th and several WBYC Advanced Opti sailors will be competing. There will be Opti classes held in the morning and there will be NO Opti or 420 class held on Wednesday afternoon July 28th due to the club’s participation in this Regatta. Please be prompt when picking up your sailor from the a.m. class. Doors will be locked at noon.
WBYC held their annual Christmas in July on Thursday July 22nd. Fun was had by all. Hot Cocoa, candy canes, Christmas Cookies (thank you Nick and Paula S.) and a sand castle cake (Thank you Websters) were enjoyed by all during the hot dog lunch. Gifts were swapped and sailors were happy with their booty!
Lousy Thursday dinner was held last week by Mrs. Joe Allen and Mrs. Sloppy Harrington last week. A small crowd was on hand and all enjoyed this great dinner!
We are looking forward to a great Session 2 and please keep an eye on the news to see what will be planned going forward.
If you have an announcement please contact Sudie Fay (fayseven@comcast.net) and she will be happy to include it. Have a great weekend!

The Beginner/Intermediate Opti class improved a great deal this week and even learned how to capsize their boats. Beginners Emma, Shaelyn, and Amanda faced their fear of the wind and had a wonderful week of sailing. Ava, Nick, Elizabeth, Jessica and Kate all returning sailors showed strong improvement in their skills and set a great example for their fellow sailors. Great job everyone!
The Advanced Opti class is bigger and better than ever before. Alec and Max led the pack in a variety of drills. Katie and Kelley both new to the Advanced Opti group kept up with the figure ‘8’, reach sprint start and ‘follow the leader’ drills.
The 420 sailors worked hard this week learning how to roll tack and effectively sail with skipper and crew. Katie M. and Jake blew the instructors away with their amazing skippering skills and worked well with crew members: Lizzie, Chase, Caroline and Abby. This group has incredible potential and all of the instructors are excited to see what the summer racing will bring!
Next week Opti’s will work on tacking, Advanced Opti’s will work on rolls and 420’s will be learning how to roll/jibe! Scrimmages with other clubs will be set up shortly. Stay tuned.
We had an impromptu hotdog lunch this Thursday and celebrated Chris Raposo’s birthday with a cake from Mom! Please sign up to host an LTD if you haven’t already. We have two Thursdays remaining to fill. Christmas in July is scheduled for Thursday July 22nd. Please have your sailor bring a small wrapped gift to class (no more than $5) to join in the class holiday swap.
If you have an announcement please contact Sudie Fay (fayseven@comcast.net) and she will be happy to include it. Have a great weekend!

Junior Sailing Program News

Our first week of the Jr. Sailing Program got off to a great start. The Beginner and Intermediate Opti sailors are taking to the water and their boats like old pros. Amanda Allen, Chris Raposo and Emma McGuire were particularly impressive first-timers, with Nick B. and Spencer stepping up and leading the pack.
The Advanced Opti sailors are picking up right where they left off with new faces of Caroline Raposo and Annie Lawrence challenging the all boy crew out on the course. Some of these sailors are preparing to sail in a few local regattas including Wianno, Edgartown and Falmouth. There is rumored to be a scrimmage against Menauhant’s Opti team in a few weeks.
It’s been a great first week for the 420 sailors as well, with beginning and returning sailors alike fairing extremely well in unusually high winds days. We were even graced by the presence of Michelle, Julia and Dan Martin, Connor McLeod for a day or two. We should see more of them next session.
Thank you to all parents for prompt pick up and signing in/out their sailor(s). It’s shaping up to be a great summer!
Please remember to sign up to host a Lousy Thursday dinner. There are still a few slots available to host. Remember two families can sign up to host a LTD dinner. There is an easy ‘LTD how to’ directions sheet on the bulletin board to reference if you have never had the chance to host.
All Junior Sailing Program families are invited to attend the annual WBYC Fourth of July BBQ this Sunday July 4th at noon. It’s free! Hot Dogs and Hamburgers and a variety of other dishes will be served. You are invited to bring a side dish or dessert to share with others. So please come on by and meet some of the folks that make WBYC so special.
If you have an announcement please contact Sudie Fay (fayseven@comcast.net) and we will be happy to include it. Have a great weekend!
